PAWS Therapy Dog Training is the culmination of a very personal journey that started over six years ago, when I had a dawning realisation that my daughter was really struggling...
I looked to various different professionals for support, but they all shrugged her traits off as 'quirks' - and even when I spoke with her School, they didn’t recognise the young girl I had described.
Honestly, I felt like a hysterical mother, crying all the time and getting nowhere!
Until one day, I was driving on the M25 and my daughter had a huge incident. She was overtired, overheated and needed some sensory input to help herself regulate.
She was in the middle of a huge meltdown and she started trying to climb out of the car window on the M25. At the time, I was alone in the car with my daughter and younger son - and I was petrified.
That day was 'the straw that broke the camel's back' for me: To say that I was distraught would be an understatement.
I self-referred to Social Services and asked my Doctor to emergency refer us to CAMHs.
Over 2 years later, we finally got a diagnosis of ASD from CAMHs and have since receive diagnosis of ADHD and OCD.
That experience was a catalyst for me and led to us training our family dog, Jackson, as a Therapy Dog to support my daughter.
That experience was a catalyst for me!
I have since completed numerous qualifications in Animal Assisted Therapy, Understanding Autism, Counselling, Mental Health First Aid and a Dog Training Qualification which has led me to fulfil my life’s work to enhance the wellbeing of those who experience poor mental health, disability or social disadvantage.
PAWS is more than a passion for me... it’s a mission to bring the magic of Canine Assisted Interventions to those who can most benefit.
